10/07/11 – 10/08/11 Ocean Beach will be rockin' Oct. 7th & 8th to the sounds of OB Oktoberfest.
The Ocean Beach Oktoberfest - the uniquely Southern California salute to the celebration of German culture and fun - is back this year, with a second day added.
This year, the party will begin on Friday Oct. 7 and extend through Saturday night on Oct. 8.
Hours are 4:30 to 10:00 p.m. on Friday and 11:00 am to 10:00 pm on Saturday.
Friday night’s schedule will feature the finals of Beer Garden Band Slam, a competition to crown the best cover or tribute band at the beach. Preliminary rounds of the competition will be held Sept. 18 and Sept. 25 at Winston’s Beach Club in Ocean Beach and 710 Beach Club in Pacific Beach.
Also Friday will include a 91X Happy Hour celebration. For a 91-minute period ending at 6:31, Oktoberfest attendees may purchase 2-for-1 beers. In addition, Friday’s event includes a Beer Garden Blonde’a’thon promotion, guaranteeing free admission and beer-drinking boot to anyone who shows up before 6:01 p.m. in a blonde wig or with blonde braids. Radio station 91X will broadcast live from Oktoberfest until 7:00 pm.
The Saturday schedule is packed tight with the annual Brew Cup microbrew festival occurring from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday. The day will begin with a Bloody Mary Morning celebration at 11:00 am and continue with bratwurst-eating, stein-holding and other traditional Oktoberfest contests. One again, participants will vie for a $10,000 cash prize in the infamous, one-of-a-kind Sausage Toss competition.
In addition to the food and craft vendors and an all-ages stage on the grassy area at the foot of Newport Avenue, Saturday’s Oktoberfest will include performances by the Electric Waste Band, Tommy Cubs, The Heavy Guilt, the Naked Funk, Bateke Beat, Tribal Theory and the Bavarian Beer Garden Band.
Admission to the beer garden is a $3 donation that goes to support the Ocean Beach community. The outdoor area is free and all ages.
The event also offers shuttle service back and forth from Pacific Beach on both Friday and Saturday and a bicycle parking area.
During the past decade, the OB Oktoberfest – a joint venture between Hoy Hoy Boys, the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association and the Ocean Beach Community Foundation –has raised more than $150,000 for local nonprofit organizations.
